Housing: Transitional Housing
For people who have been homeless, transitional housing is seen as an intermediate step between shelter living (or being on the streets) and having one’s own place, which in some cases may mean supportive housing. Transitional housing typically is short term (with limits on the length of stay), offers people their own private rooms, and is intended to provide a supportive living environment, as well as tools and opportunities for social and skills development. Well established in countries such as Great Britain, there is very limited experience and research on transitional housing in Canada.

Transitional housing can be long-term (e.g. up to 2 years) for individuals who have experienced repeated housing crises and require support and assistance over a sustained period to address their health and social needs. Research indicates that by providing resident-centered services in a non-judgmental environment, people with challenging problems (such as mental illness...
, substance use issues, HIV or HEP C) can make healthier decisions, bring a greater level of stability to their lives, and reduce their need of emergency health or social services.
