A Survey of Psychosocial Characteristics of Homeless Families
Don't have access to the article? Read about our open access policy here.
Seeking to identify the psychosocial characteristics of homeless families, 19 mothers of 50 children ages 2-15 living in a hotel for the homeless in Birmingham, England, completed a semistructured interview, the General Health Questionnaire, & the Child Behavior Checklist within a week after admission. The majority of families (74%) had become homeless because of domestic violence. Problems found in both mothers & children are discussed. A significant association was found between child & maternal levels of social dysfunction. Only three mothers & one child were receiving mental health treatment. The reported high rates of psychosocial morbidity indicate the need for further investigation in different types of hotels, & the development of accessible health, educational, & social services for homeless children & their parents. 1 Table, 39 References.
