This fact sheet explains the range of assistance the federal government provides to support the development of Aboriginal housing in Canada. Through Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Government of Canada spends an estimated $261 million per year on meeting on-reserve housing needs. In 2005, an additional $295 million over 5 years was committed for housing on-reserve. Through Budget 2006, Canada is investing up to $300 million for northern housing and up to $300 million to help provinces address short-term housing needs for Aboriginal Canadians living off reserve. Of this, $38.2 million is allocated to Quebec.(excerpt from fact sheet published on INAC site)
