The circle of disadvantage is a theory stating that family violence causes educational failure, which causes poverty, then ill health, and results in more violence. This article describes the social and economic conditions of Canada's Aboriginal population, reviews the contributing factors to these conditions, and explores initiatives to end the "circle of disadvantage." Though all of Canada's native population is examined, specific references are made to Aboriginal settlements in the north.
