Family Violence and Homelessness : a Review of the Literature

This literature review summarizes current knowledge about the relationship between family violence and homelessness. It begins by considering the categories of homelessness that have been identified in the literature, pointing out the difficulties that definitional problems pose to any attempt to gain an accurate estimate of the extent of homelessness in Canada.

Emphasis is placed on major research findings on the relationship between family violence and homelessness, specifically regarding: - associations between family violence and homelessness - dynamics of the link between family violence and homelessness - implications for service providers and - research gaps Terminology and definitions used for this report are explained below, along with discussion of broader issues of definitions and research methodology on family violence and homelessness. The review of research findings follows, organized according to the main sub-topics listed above.
