Societal Cost of Homelessness Released for Information to the Edmonton Joint Planning Committee on Housing and the Calgary Homeless Foundation.
Author(s):
With the 2002 national urban cost estimated at $1,400,000,000, there is no doubt that the societal cost of homelessness is significant, particularly when it is understood that the cost estimates are understated. In addition, the foregone opportunity cost of the positive contribution this segment of society could make is not included in the calculations. More research is urgently required to understand the pathways into, through, and out of homelessness, and to quantify the financial benefits that would accrue to society from a reduction in homelessness.
