In times of emergency extra measures are needed to protect the most vulnerable members of society. The recent emergence of H1N1 has made clear the necessity for a focused pandemic plan that addresses the special needs of those who are homeless. A combination of social, systemic, and personal factors (such as having an underlying health condition, spending extended time in congregate settings, and having limited control over one’s diet) all increase a homeless person’s risk of becoming ill. Pandemic planning for this population must address the role of shelters and social service providers while acknowledging the financial, spatial, and staffing constraints that agencies face. In Canada and across the United States governments and private organizations have created pandemic plans for the homelessness sector. What is needed is a coordinated effort to bring these resources together in one accessible space.
The Homeless Hub proudly introduces “The Pandemic Planning and Homelessness Research Network”. As an extension of the Homeless Hub this network allows people who are interested in homelessness and pandemic planning to come together in a collaborative on-line environment. This dynamic website features a library of resources and documents from governments and community agencies that can be accessed from one user-friendly site. Researchers, service providers, government officials and others are invited to share information and documents, participate in discussion forums, and collaborate on strategies to minimize the likelihood and impact of the spread of infectious disease among people who are homeless.
