Legal & Justice Issues: Domestic Violence
Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical injuries, abuse and rape or mental cruelty in the form of bullying, insults or harassment. Very often, domestic violence is a combination of physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse. Violence against women and children, by fathers and husbands is increasingly a cause of homelessness. Women usually make the decision to leave their abusive partners when the violence escalates and the need to protect their children intensifies.

In leaving, the problems that battered women face include economic loss and poverty, fear of added violence, the loss of their homes and communities and fear of being alone. Women that flee violence are forced to deal with a lack of subsidized daycare, inadequate employment opportunities, and lack of access to affordable housing. Battered women face significant discrimination from landlords when trying to find a home. Women and children often end up homeless.

nd accessible services, interventions and laws that involve social services, legal aid and police services are required to assist woman that are experiencing domestic violence. Women and children that enter the homelessness system are at great risk of physical, sexual and emotional harm.
