Housing: NIMBY (Not in My Backyard)
NIMBY, an acronym for "Not In My Backyard," describes the phenomenon in which residents of a neightborhood designate a new development (e.g. shelter, affordable housing, day centre, etc.) or change in occupancy of an existing development as inappropriate or unwanted for their local area. Even if the development is clearly a benefit for many, there is often opposition to affordable, supportive or transitional housing projects, based on the characteristics fo the people who will be living in the developments.

It is very challenging to gain acceptance for such projects in communties all across Canada, despite the intentions outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Section 15(1) which says "Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age, or men...
tal or physical disability.” The Charter applies to provincial laws and municipal Official Plans, zoning by-laws, Committee of Adjustment decisions, and municipal council decisions, such as a council-approved moratorium on more supportive or emergency housing for a particular ward or neighborhood.
