Research: Research Alliance for Canadian Homelessness, Housing and Health
The problem of homelessness has important implications in a wide range of public domains, including health care delivery, public health, housing policy and welfare policy. Most of the world literature on homelessness and health comes from the United States. While these research findings are not simply applicable to the Canadian setting, the body of original research papers on homelessness and health in Canada remains quite small.

REACH3 aims to increase the research capacity across Canada by taking a national, transdisciplinary approach that takes into account the complexity of causes and consequences of homelessness.

Reach3 will seek to conduct research that informs public policy and prompts actions that improve the health of homeless people in Canada. Using a variety of methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative analysis, REACH3 with pursue research organized under four broad themes:

1. Description and analysis of the huma...
n face of homelessness and the health status of homeless people

2. Determinants of homelessness, marginalization and ill health

3. Demand for health and social services among homeless people and the health care system's ability to respond to these needs

4. Delivery and evaluation of interventions to improve the health of the homeless.

REACH3 is establishing a network of academic researchers and community-based organizations in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. This geographic breadth will promote multi-centre research that is grounded in local circumstances and experiences, with findings relevant across the country. Research with a nationwide breadth will greatly enhance the potential policy impact of research on homelessness and health at the local, provincial, federal, and international levels.

REACH3 recognizes the paramount importance of collaborating with homeless people and community-based organizations, and the need to integrate community concerns into research programming. Specific research projects in various cities will involve appropriate local community members at every stage from inception to knowledge translation. Community representatives, drawn from major organizations serving homeless adults or street-involved youth in their respective cities, will help ensure that REACH3 stays in touch with community concerns and maintains its commitment to community-based research.

Results
Examples of Canadian-based research projects anticipated to be undertaken over the next five years as part of the REACH3 alliance include:

1. Instrument for measuring quality of life among homeless people.

2. Development of theoretical models of processes of marginalization and social exclusion.

3. Multi-centre study of drug overdoses among the homeless and housed.

4. Utilization of health care services among homeless persons.

5. Evaluation of intervention programs for preventing or addressing homelessness.
