Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI) 2001 – 2011

Since 2001, the federal government, through CMHC, has invested over $1.2 billion under the AHI. More than 52,200 units were funded under the AHI.

The approach to how the federal government invests in affordable housing today is built on the success of the Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI). The AHI changed the landscape for affordable housing programs across the country with the introduction in 2001 of a multilateral housing framework:

  • The framework established the broad parameters for bilateral agreements between CMHC and all provinces and territories, to increase the supply of affordable housing in Canada
  • Programs were designed and delivered by provinces and territories and could include new affordable rental and home ownership
  • The federal investment was cost-matched through contributions by provincial/territorial governments and others
