Finally, A National Housing Strategy: Now Let’s Work Together

In November 2017, Canada released its first National Housing Strategy. Over the next 11 years, $40 billion will potentially be allocated toward building and maintaining housing units. Although this is an important first step, this will not be sufficient enough to address the severe housing problems that have accumulated over the past few decades. With 1.7 million Canadian homes in a state of core housing need, and the most severe housing crises affecting many Indigenous communities, there is a need for funding to be matched at all levels of government.

This report explores the ways that Manitoba can work toward investing adequate resources and matching federal funding. In this paper the authors:

  • analyse the gaps in existing housing programs in Manitoba,

  • highlight areas where cooperation would be beneficial,

  • and offer recommendations on how federal and provincial governments can work together to make housing a right for all Canadians.
