Growing Problem: Homeless Children

Families represent the fastest-growing segment of the nation`s homeless population, and the children in them suffer the kind of stress and instability that severely hurt their performance at school and can leave permanent psychological scars, experts warn.

Families-usually a mother with at least two children-make up 40 percent of Chicago`s homeless population, and the figure is even higher in other U.S. cities: Portland, Ore., 52 percent; New York, 62 percent; and Norfolk, Va., 80 percent.
