Housing Partnerships

Cities, Policy & Planning research series

This paper explores recent work undertaken by BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA) and the BC Rental Housing Coalition to quantify the need and demand for affordable housing in communities throughout BC. Through the Canadian Rental Housing Index and the development of the Affordable Housing Plan for BC, which influenced the government of B.C.’s affordablehousing plan, BCNPHA has been developing partnerships to address the affordability crisis across the province. These partnerships position the community housing sector as an equal partner with governments in tackling many housing-related issues. To leverage both new government investments and existing assets, BCNPHA’s planning work fosters an expanded role for the community housing sector in the development of new housing for the increasing range of people whose needs are not currently met by the market. With the continued de-coupling of local incomes from rents felt in many parts of B.C., the share of housing within the community housing sector will continue to grow.
