Senior Homelessness in Metro Vancouver: Issues and Challenges

The homeless population in Metro Vancouver is getting older. Those aged 55 and over represent 16% of the homeless population in Metro Vancouver, up significantly from 9% in 2005 (GVRD, 2012). The median age of Vancouver’s homeless population is 48.5 years, almost ten years older than Vancouver residents in general (Thomson et al, 2012). Of particular concern is that nearly 48% of homeless seniors are considered long term homeless, i.e. without a home for at least one year.
