Cultural Continuity as a Protective Factor Against Suicide in First Nations Youth

Recent evidence brought to light by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples indicates that suicide rates amongst Aboriginal youth are some of the highest rates in the world. This article looks to synthesize contemporary research put out in the wake of the publishing of the Royal Commission report. Arriving at two conclusions, the authors found that these high rates have devastated families, friends and the communities in general. Moreover, this article finds that in order to arrive at a solution, the best unit of analysis is not the youth themselves who commit suicide, but rather the communities they live in as a whole.
