Preventing Gender-Based Homelessness in Canada During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond: The Need to Account for Violence Against Women

The onset of COVID-19 has led to increases in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), a leading cause of women’s homelessness. This article reviews the context of IPV and homelessness among women and looks at real-life examples of successful coordinated prevention efforts. It also proposes starting points for developing a Canadian strategic framework that is prevention-focused, including ways to adopt inclusive definitions of IPV and homelessness, and the variety of housing support options that could be pursued.
