Cities are made up of people, the places they live, the jobs they do, and the environment that supports them. Healthy cities achieve a balance between the economic, social and environmental aspects of the community and support the development of each. The City of Calgary supports each of these dimensions through its vision to “create and sustain a vibrant, healthy, safe and caring community”. In 2004, the City of Calgary adopted a “Triple Bottom Line” (TBL) approach to decision-making, to enhance Calgary’s long-term sustainability by ensuring that social, economic and environmental considerations are taken into account in all City planning and decision-making. This report focuses on the social dimensions of the Triple Bottom Line policy framework. Currently, there are five social themes within the framework. These five themes are: - An Inclusive City - A Cultural City - An Active City - A Safe City - A City of Strong Neighbourhoods This Social Outlook provides information on these five themes. Each section provides a discussion of the issue as well as recent and anticipated policy developments.
